How to Write a Crossed Letter
Back in the 19th century when postage charges were ridiculously expensive, letter-writers saved money and stationery with a simple technique called cross-hatching. The process went something like this: the correspondent composes the letter normally, then turns the paper 90 degrees and continues writing across the page perpendicularly. This method produces what is called a crossed letter. Although nowadays, when it's rare to receive an ordinary letter - let alone a crossed one - cross-hatching is considered to be quaint and archaic. But as strange as they may seem, crossed letters are fun to write and produce beautiful patterns. Give it a try!
With pen and paper, compose your letter as you normally would.Space out your lines in preparation for the second half of the letter. This makes it a lot easier on your recipient.
Once you have filled up the page, rotate the paper 90 degrees so that it becomes landscape rather than portrait.Whether you turn it left or right is up to you.
Continue writing the rest of your letter, this time writingperpendicularto your previous writing.Try to keep your writing as tidy as possible. It's hard enough reading a crossed letter as it is; illegible handwriting makes deciphering it nearly impossible.
Finish the letter and sign it.Voila! You're done!
- Use cross-hatching in a diary or private journal to prevent others from reading your secrets.
- Because crossed letters are so difficult to read, try writing the crossed part of the letter with a differently colored ink. This will save the recipient a lot of trouble!
- The beauty of a crossed letter is greatly enhanced when written in cursive.
